frequently asked questions

  • Consultations are hosted over the phone or a virtual platform. Typically, a consultation lasts 15-20 minutes. This is an opportunity for both of us to get to know each other and assess if we are a good fit.

I know the process of (re-)starting therapy can be overwhelming. I start all consultations with a brief introduction and walk you through a handful of questions that I find helpful to ask prospective clients. Then, I make sure to carve out space for any questions you might have for me.

Each consultation ends with a choice to either take time and think things over or schedule a first appointment.

  • Our first few sessions together will look different from the rest. We will complete an intake assessment and set some intentions for our work together. During this process, we will gently begin gathering information about your mental and physical health as well as your background.

Our sessions after this process will follow a bit of a rhythm. As a collaborative therapist, I make an effort to blend my ideas for session with what my clients have in mind. I encourage clients to bring topics and updates to each session.

  • Individual therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes in length. We have greater flexibility to schedule a longer session(s) if needed.

  • I am primarily an existential-humanistic therapist, which, broadly speaking, involves exploring how our distress stems from or feeds into life’s big questions – meaning, purpose, isolation, freedom, responsibility, death. To support this approach, I might also draw from other schools of psychotherapy from time to time including, but not limited to, Interpersonal Process, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Narrative Therapy.

  • There is no straight answer to this, which I know might be unhelpful to hear. This type of work takes time and can be intensive. Typically, clients begin with more frequent sessions and how often we meet drops off over the course of time. I find most of my clients are involved in therapy for at least six months. Eventually, it is my hope for all of my clients to feel ready to do the work on their own or to take a pause from therapy.

If you’re coming to therapy wanting to be finished in 4-6 sessions, we might not be the best fit, and that is okay. I am more than happy to provide you with referrals to other providers that might be a better fit.

  • I offer virtual and in-person sessions. Clients are welcome to do a blend of both if they prefer. Depending on the season, we may also be able to have our session outdoors, which I call a “walk-and-talk” session.

  • A 50-minute session is $160. This rate aligns with the current market for my years in practice, education, and qualifications. Please know that this fee is subject to change each year with inflation and additional trainings.

  • I do not accept insurance, and I do this with intention. Insurance companies require a formal diagnosis and can dictate the number of sessions a client can meet with a therapist. They will also have permanent access to your mental health information. When we choose to opt out of insurance networks, we have greater flexibility in determining a course of treatment that works for you.

If you are concerned about affording therapy, please reach out! As an insurance “workaround,” for clients with Out of Network benefits, I am happy to provide a Superbill. Additionally, I do offer a sliding scale and am happy to discuss this in greater detail with prospective clients.

  • Some insurance plans are able to offer partial and even full reimbursement for clients paying out-of-pocket for healthcare services. To receive reimbursement, insurance plans require clients to submit a Superbill, which is essentially a specific type of invoice. I am more than happy to provide Superbills to clients at anytime.

For prospective and current clients looking to learn about out-of-network benefits, you always have the option to directly contact your insurance company. For anyone leery of being on hold or asking the right questions, an online group called SuperBill offers a benefits check on your behalf. After experimenting with their Benefits Calculator myself, all you have to do is enter basic information about yourself (name, date of birth, an email address) and your insurance (insurer, member ID, and type of service). Within 24-48 hours, SuperBill will share with you more about your out-of-network benefits.

Going forward, you may also use SuperBill to submit your superbills over time. They will do the work to file, track, and resolve claims.
